Zaragoza and the Spanish Pyrenees Guests of Collett’s Mountain Holidays’ new summer walking programme centred on Panticosa in the Spanish Pyrenees will be able to combine an exhilarating mountain holiday in Alto Aragon with a fascinating side trip to Expo 2008 in the provincial capital of Zaragoza from 14 June to 14 September 2008.

“Our guests will only be a two hour drive away from Expo but those who fly from the UK to Zaragoza will have an opportunity to visit Expo at the beginning or at the end of their holiday”, commented Tom Collett, Managing Director of Collett’s. “Expo 2008 promises to be hugely popular and its theme ‘The Biggest Water Festival on Earth” is bound to be highly appealing”.

Describing the company’s new walking programme in the Spanish Pyrenees, Collett said: “In Panticosa, Alto Aragon, the successful Collett's Mountain Holiday ‘formula’ applies, but the geography of the Pyrenees means that this type of holiday is primarily for walkers who relish the challenge of a series of breath taking day walks in wild and remote mountain terrain. Geographical highlights include the stunning 3,000 metre high peaks of the Sierra de la Partacua, the Sierra de Tendenera and the glacial Valle de Tena.

“From an historical perspective, the province of Aragon - birthplace of Henry VIII’s wife Catherine – has many fascinating themes. Indeed, the province has attracted notable figures such as the Roman Emperor Tiberius who enjoyed the mountain spa at the Banos de Panticosa, close to our resort hotel in Panticosa; additionally, there’s an amazing array of historic sites throughout the province including Romanesque churches and castles from the 13th century.

“In more recent times, the mountain ranges nearby witnessed much activity as escape routes both for Spanish refugees during the Civil War and also for allied airmen who had been shot down during the Second World War in mainland Europe and were making their escape back to the UK through the Pyrenees and neutral Spain. On the literary front, famous British writers such as Laurie Lee (When I walked out one summer’s morning) and George Orwell both visited the region during the Spanish Civil War era (1936-1939)”.

Summer season prices for 7 nights range from £355 per person bed & breakfast to £450 per person half board in 2 and 3 star hotel accommodation.

Accommodation for 7 nights in self-catering apartments ranges from £195 per person to £260 per person depending on the number of guests and type of apartment.
