Loadsa Mani Walks Worldwide encounters a different side of Greece during an 8-day self-guided walking exploration of the Mani peninsula in the Greek Peloponnese, following cobbled mule tracks amongst fabulous flora and fauna, from secluded sandy coves to the mighty Taygetos Mountains. Daily departures from Kalamata are available throughout May, June, September and October 2008.

The Mani peninsula occupies an unspoilt and sparsely populated corner of Greece, with rugged mountains towering high above delightful sandy coves. Based in the pretty coastal village of Kardamili, guests enjoy the luxury of walking at their own pace, lingering to observe the butterflies and prolific birdlife, dawdling amidst fields of wild orchids and relaxing in clear, calm waters at numerous swimming spots.

Choose from a ‘menu’ of walks, following well-marked footpaths between olive and almond groves, stopping at hamlets en route to admire the ancient architecture and enjoying lengthy lunches at simple cafés. Take a pilgrim route from the preserved village of Milea to the monastery of Panagia latrissa with magnificent views out to the distant Aegean Islands.

Board a local bus and travel high into the mountains, returning on foot via century-old mule tracks winding through alpine villages, past a rock chapel and castle, to the coast and the golden sandy beach of Kalogria. Spend a day in Kalamata, the olive growing capital of Greece, visit the markets, profuse with succulent black olives, figs and delicious honey, explore the underground sea caves at Diros or the Byzantine ruins of Mystras with its beautiful icons. Enjoy freshly caught fish at a local taverna, sample late night ouzo in an intimate bar and best of all watch a spectacular Mani sunset.

The tour costs £595 p/p (land only) including guesthouse accommodation, airport transfers, most meals with wine plus walking notes and route maps.

Flights are not included but available through Walks Worldwide.
