Bank Holiday wash out sees Brits fleeing the UK

The dismal Bank Holiday weather and downpour which greeted commuters last Bank Holiday as they travelled back to work has lead to a huge surge in holiday bookings as Britons make a bid to escape the downpour for sunnier climes.

Across the weekend and particularly on Tuesday morning, one travel company witnessed a huge surge in hits to its website seeing a thirty seven percent increase in holiday bookings.

Andrew Gibson, director of directholidaybookings.co.uk, said: “We saw a record number of visitors to our site across the weekend and especially yesterday morning as people returned back to the office, resulting in a thirty seven percent increase in bookings compared to this time last week making it our busiest day yet for online holiday home bookings.

“Top destinations include Florida, Mexico and Thailand suggesting Brits are all out to secure the warmest weather given the appalling summer last year and the wash-out this weekend. “

Another reason for the rise in popularity of far away destinations could be due to the pound’s current fall in value against the Euro. Andrew continued: “The cost of visiting traditional European locations such as the Greek Isles, Spain and France has significantly risen recently and we believe this has lead to an increasing number of British holidaymakers looking at cheaper deals in Bulgaria, Turkey, Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco.

“With the euro worth 79p yesterday, British tourists are finding that their money will go much further if they consider alternative locations.”
