Crossing the Alps
Discover one of Europe's most spectacular, long distance trails from picturesque Bavaria through the mighty glaciated mountains of the Austrian Tyrol to 'Mediterranean' Merano in Italy. Walks Worldwide’s new guided 10-day Austria & Germany - Across the Alps tour following 200kms of the ancient E5 through flower-filled meadows, over high passes, past glacial lakes and across alpine plateaux, departs Munich 9th July and 6th August 2008.From Munich, continue to the scenic Bavarian village of Oy-Mittelberg, then on to Oberstdorf from where the main luggage is transferred to Merano. Travelling light, walkers head to the first mountain hut (1,846m) before dropping down into Holzgau in the Austrian Tyrol. Skirting alpine lakes and meadows, continue along mountain passes, down valleys and through various climatic zones.
A gondola ride negates steep ascents, allowing for time to enjoy breathtaking scenery across several summits and glacier tongues hanging on steep walls either side. The goal is the Braunschweiger Hut (2,760m) situated in front of a majestic chain of glaciated mountains and dominated by the Wildspitze (3,780m).
After a hearty meal, enjoy the solitude and silence of this beautiful spot. Next, traverse the high point of the trail, the Pitztaler Jochl (2,995m), home to Mountain Ibex and Steinbocke Sheep, then continue down to Oetztal, home of the famous 'glacier mummy'. Hike across into Italy, passing Gilft Waterfall en route and enjoying spectacular views of the Ortler (3,890m), the highest mountain in the eastern Alps, before reaching the mediaeval city of Merano and awaiting luggage. Finally, enjoy a celebration evening having traversed the Alps, before taking the train back to Munich in time for homeward flights next day.
