Visit the passion play of the decade

11th June 2008 Print
Visit the passion play of the decade The countdown has begun to the event of the decade – The Oberammergau Passion Play 2010. With this historic event only taking place once every ten years and with tickets not yet released, Leger Holidays is urging people not to miss out on this hugely popular occasion by registering their interest in the event now.

The Passion Play is a tradition that dates back almost 400 years to 1633, when the Great Plague descended on a tiny Alpine village in Bavaria. Many of the villagers died as a result of the plague, but when hope was almost gone, the villagers solemnly vowed that if those who still lived were spared, they would enact a play depicting Christ's suffering, death and resurrection. Miraculously, the Plague took no more lives and, true to their vows, the villagers enacted their first play in 1634. They have retold the story every ten years to this day.

From May to October 2010 the village of Oberammergau will host the 41st Passion Play, continuing the centuries long tradition by staging a unique performance featuring more that 2000 participants from the village, on a large open air stage.

Leger Holidays will be providing several tours that will enable visitors to experience the Oberammergau Passion Play throughout the summer of 2010.

However, demand for this unique event is always extremely high so Leger Holidays is urging people not to miss out on this opportunity by registering their interest now at visitpassionplay.com to ensure they are the first to know about Leger’s Oberammergau tours.*

Dates and prices will be released over the next few weeks and those who have registered with Leger Holidays will receive information in the post once it is available.

Speaking about Oberammergau, Huw Williams Marketing Director at Leger holidays commented: “Every ten years, people from across the world descend on this small village to be part of history and experience something which is quite momentous. In 2000 we took over 6000 guests to Oberammergau for the Passion Play. In 2010 over 500,000 people are expected to attend the festival, we can only offer a limited number of places so anyone who is keen to attend the event should register their interest now to have the best opportunity to get a place on the tour.”

For people who can’t wait until 2010 and would like to visit Oberammergau before then, a visit to the historic village is included in Leger’s Bavarian Castle and the Romantic Road tour – a seven day break which takes in the sights of the Black Forest and the most picturesque scenic train of Germany. Prices start from £399 for seven days with travel by executive of Silver Service coach available.
