Flashpackers and grey gappers

1st July 2008 Print
Almost four in ten (39%) working Britons admit to having no time for themselves at the end of each day, according to research from American Express Insurance Services.

With work taking over their home life, it seems that more people than ever are taking sabbaticals.

Industry research shows that almost a third (29%) of Brits are planning to take a break from their job. It also reveals that 9 in 10 (90%) of gap year travellers are now over the age of 30, a phenomenon being recognised as the ‘grey gapper'.

With the increasing numbers of older wealthier Brits choosing to take gap years, more than 8% of people spending up to £10,000 on a trip, hostels are beginning to recognise this new breed of ‘flashpackers' who are not as wary of costs but more concerned with luxury.

Chris Rolland, Head of American Express Insurance Services commented: "For many working Brits it seems that there are never enough hours in the day. To escape from this, an increasing number of people are choosing to take a gap year at a later stage in life, having a financial advantage which enables them to travel in a little more luxury compared to their younger counterparts. Although the cost of travelling can add up, we would urge people not to cut corners when it comes to insurance.

"Our gap year product provides cover for anyone wanting to take a sabbatical, offering insurance which can last from three months up to two years; perfect for those working with New Zealand and Australian visas. Our 14 day window is ideal for those travellers who wish to return home to the UK briefly for a family occasion, to re-take exams, catch up with friends from home or just have a break from their travels, an aspect which is unique to our product.

From the beginning of July, American Express Insurance Services will also be offering a Family Gap Product which is ideal for any families planning a trip abroad."
