Terracotta mummies in China

25th July 2008 Print
The third in the epic adventure movie series The Mummy is scheduled for release on 8th August, the opening day of the Beijing Olympics. In this latest instalment, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, the action shifts from Egypt to China, travelling from ancient catacombs in Beijing and Xi’an to the bright lights of Shanghai.

Brendan Fraser returns to the screen as explorer and protagonist Rick O’Connell, who is once again destined to save mankind from the forces of evil. This time the O’Connell family are on a quest to stop the tyrannical Han, the Dragon Emperor whose mummy has awoken from a 2,000-year-old curse. The Emperor now wants to rebuild his empire and threatens to plunge the world into his merciless service alongside the Terracotta army.

China’s ruthless Dragon Emperor and his vast army of 10,000 warriors have lain forgotten for eons, enclosed in clay. Awoken by O’Connell’s now 18-year-old son Alex, the army is marching towards world domination and must be defeated for the good of mankind. The impressive footage was shot in Beijing, Shanghai and Xi’an, with some warrior scenes filmed in the Shaanxi Museum.

Visit Xi’an with Cox & Kings and see the full Terracotta Army in situ. The 9-night China Experience tour combines two nights in Xi’an, including visits to see the warriors and the Shaanxi Museum, with a stay in vibrant Beijing, the Great Wall of China, picturesque Nanjing and cosmopolitan Shanghai (from £1,745 per person).

A selection of warriors will be on display in Beijing from 8 – 24 August to mark the 2008 Olympics.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is scheduled for UK cinema release on Friday 8th August.
