On the primal trail – Africa

12th August 2008 Print
Almost 50 percent of the world's primates are in danger of extinction, according to a report from an international conservation group that cites habitat destruction and hunting as the two greatest threats. Great apes like gorillas still face challenges in Africa, the report said, but it was the smaller primates such as the Red Colobus Monkey, that could die out first.

Peregrine Adventures offers a collection of fascinating primate experiences in Rwanda and Uganda, plus an opportunity for a ‘behind-the-scenes’ glimpse of wildlife conservation in some of South Africa’s greatest reserves and game parks.

Rwanda & Uganda:
Preserving Primates of Rwanda: 10-days – next available departure from Kigali 22nd Nov 08.
Against the spectacular backdrop of Rwanda’s emerald green Virunga volcanoes, two treks are undertaken, one in search of the endangered mountain gorillas, and the other seeking out little-known, rare golden monkeys, who share this lofty forested habitat. Later, another gorilla trek is undertaken in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and in Kibale National Park, a special visit is made to the Jane Goodall Institute where travellers are afforded a rare opportunity to go behind-the-scenes with rangers, watching them interact with chimp families. Researchers also spend time explaining the threats to the primate populations of Africa and steps being taken to preserve various species. Participation on this tour directly contributes towards primate conservation efforts.
The tour costs £2,675 p/p including trekking permits and a conservation contribution.

South Africa:
Wildlife – Behind the Scenes: 9-days – next available departure from Johannesburg 1st Nov 08.
This trip offers a unique insight into wildlife and bush conservation, working with vets, researchers and ecologists. See Chimpanzees in semi-wild surroundings and observe their social interaction and behavioural patterns at the Jane Goodall Chimpanzee Sanctuary, during a privately guided tour. Explore the Elephant Sanctuary and get hands on with Africa’s biggest inhabitants, dispelling some of the myths normally associated with these mammals. Experience hidden aspects of wildlife conservation, gain some ranger and bush skills, and knowledge in dart guns and other wildlife immobilisation techniques. Spend a morning with local researchers in the Greater Kruger National Park and seek out elephants by telemetry tracking. Take a behind-the-scenes look at the Khama Reptile Park, shadowing veterinarian work being done. Enjoy a ‘traditional’ safari experience searching for wildlife, including the famous ‘Big 5’ on several open vehicle game drives. All in all, an amazing conservation experience!
The tour costs £2,155 p/p including a conservation contribution.

Both tours include Peregrine’s local tour leader, arrival transfer, all transportation, accommodation, most meals, entrance fees to parks/reserves/sights as per itinerary and expertly guided game viewing activities.
