According to a recent news report, DNA tests are to be carried out on the mummified remains of two stillborn children found in Tutankhamun’s tomb. It is hoped that these tests will confirm whether the children were the offspring of King Tut.

For those seeking a greater understanding of Egypt’s ancient civilisations, Peregrine Adventures’ 10-day Egypt in Depth tour includes an extensive exploration of Cairo, a Nile boat cruise from Aswan to Luxor via the temples of Komombo and Edfu, and a visit to the Valley of the Kings. Next available tour departs Cairo 8th September 08.

The tour commences in Cairo with an introduction to Pharonic Egypt, visiting the Pyramids, Sphinx and Egyptian Museum. The city’s fascinating Arab-influenced, medieval side is explored too, with the excellent Museum of Islamic Art, a real gem housing some of the world’s finest Islamic exhibits, and Khan el Khalili bazaar, topping the itinerary. The colourful and chaotic bazaar with its tortuous streets and alleyways packed with attendant hawkers, looks like a scene from 1001 Nights. Peregrine’s local tour leader expertly guides travellers around the bazaar, from the gold market to the aromatic spice market, heavy with the scent of Cumin, Coriander and Cardamom.

In Aswan, Egypt’s southernmost city, soak up the town’s laid-back charm, visit the impressive Temple of Isis on Philae Island and explore the excellent souk. Later, board a Nile cruise boat and set sail in style down one of the world’s most extraordinary waterways, bound for Luxor, stopping en route to view the temples of Komombo and Edfu. In Luxor, take a horse-drawn carriage to the massive complex at Karnak – one of the greatest temples ever constructed.

Cross the Nile and explore the famous ‘west bank’, including the Valley of the Kings where a specialist local guide is on hand to explain the funerary rites of the Ancient Egyptians, during visits to three of the best Royal tombs. The famous temple of Queen Hatshepsut, carved into a natural amphitheatre, is next, followed by the impressive Colossi of Memnon. Returning to Cairo, another facet of Cairene culture, is revealed - Coptic Cairo, plus there’s a tour of the quirky Gayer-Anderson Museum and magnificent Ibn Tulun Mosque.

The tour costs £575 p/p including Peregrine’s tour leader and professional local guides, arrival transfer, all transportation (road, sleeper train and Nile cruise), accommodation, most meals, sightseeing and entrance fees as per itinerary.
