Moguls, Mosques and Mahals

18th August 2008 Print
Former Dragoman driver Ben Grayling, is currently undergoing a rigorous training programme in the Himalaya, prior to attempting to climb Mount Everest and plant the company flag atop the summit.

Dragoman Overland’s 15-night Moguls, Mosques and Mahals tour offers spectacular views of the Himalayan range and Mount Everest, without the ‘slog’, during a rich and varied journey from Kathmandu to New Delhi via Nepal’s Royal Chitwan National Park and the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Next overland departs Kathmandu 27th September 2008.

From the ancient tri-city capital - Kantipur, Bhaktapur and Patan, that is the chaos and calm of modern Kathmandu, descend to Nepal’s lowland ‘terai’ and Royal Chitwan NP. Here, there’s the opportunity to take elephant-back explorations in search of elusive tigers, rhinos and sloth bears. Crossing the frontier into India’s state of Uttar Pradesh and the holy city of Varanasi on the banks of the Ganges senses are awakened by the sights, sounds and smells of India.

Later in Madhya Pradesh, the intricate carvings found at the erotic temples of Khajuraho only serve to emphasise the lack of Missionary imagination.

Leopards and Tigers are again sought amongst the dense jungle of remote Panna National Park before heading back into Uttar Pradesh, where Agra and the Taj Mahal remain enduring attractions. Cross into Rajasthan for visits to the ancient mogul capital of Fatehpur Sikri and Maharaja Jai Sing’s rose-pink city of Jaipur before arriving amongst the bustling streets and bazaars of India’s third largest city, New Delhi.

The overland costs £425 plus kitty of $320 (~£170), including hotel and camping accommodation (70%/30%), all camp meals, transport aboard Dragoman Overlands customised truck and expert guidance from a two person crew and local guides.

International flights are not included but are available through Dragoman Overland.
