One in ten holiday romances lead to wedding bells

22nd August 2008 Print
Those heading off abroad this year could return home with more than just a tan - almost one in 10 Brits (nine per cent) end up marrying their holiday romance.

Over a third of Brits (34 per cent) have had a romantic encounter on holiday but nearly half (47 per cent) don't have the staying power to last beyond the break, according to price comparison website, moneysupermarket.com. Surprisingly, it is those over sixty who are the luckiest in finding love abroad with one in five (22 per cent) tying the knot with their holiday romance.

Twenty-something Brits are most likely to have a short-lived romance while soaking up the sun (49 per cent). Of the regions, Londoners are the most likely Casanovas - 43 per cent have had a romantic liaison abroad. However, it is those in the South West and East Anglia who make it past the journey home, with 16 per cent of holiday flings ending in marriage.

Brits say Europe is the best place to go for those looking for love, with almost a third (29 per cent) of foreign flings occurring whilst visiting the continent and unsurprisingly, Paris is crowned the city of love.

Peter Gerrard of moneysupermarket.com said: "For all those looking for fun and love in the sun, the chances of a holiday romance look pretty good. It seems the over sixties are hopeless romantics and it's great to know that you are never too old to find love. For those singletons planning to jet off over the bank holiday, it's worth noting that Paris and Majorca top the holiday romance hotspots.

"But, with all the excitement and anticipation of what your getaway may have in stall, it is important to ensure that you have adequate travel insurance cover before you leave, wherever you are going. Last minute cancellations, theft and unexpected medical treatment are all possibilities which can affect any of us and ruin what was looking to be a perfect holiday. Exclusions and caveats are commonplace so it is important to check the small print carefully. I advise Brits to plan ahead and shop around for the best value policy."
