Out with the yobs - now it's British snobs abroad

26th August 2008 Print
The majority of Britons are desperate to shed the British yob abroad image, according to research from Cater Allen private bank. Over 57 per cent of Britons are shunning many normal tourist spots, choosing instead locations where they know they are unlikely to run into fellow Britons.

Some 52 per cent of those opting for alternative locations claimed that they did so because they believe British tourists behave badly on holiday.

Indeed, the research shows the increasing importance that Britons now place on their holidays and the image this projects. Some 46 per cent of Britons now believe that the holiday they chose reflects them as an individual. One third (33 per cent) of Britons name going on good holidays as one of the three most important things to them and spend on average 10 per cent of their of their net income on their holidays each year.

Four per cent of Britons admit to trying to out-do their friends and colleagues with their holiday choices while 41 per cent of people rush to show off pictures to colleagues and friends when they return from holiday.

Britons' holiday discernment is not just limited to location, but also the choice of holiday accommodation. The most desired accommodation is a luxury Villa on a beach (36 per cent) followed by a deluxe hotel complex (14 per cent) and Five star city hotel (12 per cent). Eco friendly lodges (nine per cent), safari lodges (seven per cent) and luxury yachts (five per cent) are also highly sought after.

Sally Watts, Director of Marketing at Cater Allen, said: "Britons are becoming more discerning about where they holiday and are keen to avoid stereotypes of British unruliness abroad. Indeed, today's international Britons are far removed from this image, preferring luxury lodges and holidays that reflect their ambitions.
