Adrenaline junkie Brits can't sit still on holiday

1st September 2008 Print
The days of lazing motionless on a beach are over for Britons, according to research from Cater Allen Private Bank. Only one in five Britons intends to "do nothing" on their holiday, with the majority (54 per cent) intending to do some kind of activity.

Top of the activity wish list is trekking, with 26 per cent intending to walk while on holiday. Scuba diving features heavily too, with 12 per cent of Brits intending to go under the waves. Traditional sports such as sailing (five per cent) and windsurfing (one per cent) also seem to be losing ground to new extreme sports, with five per cent of Britons opting for snowboarding or sandboarding, three per cent for white water rafting and two per cent for bungee jumping.

This is further evidence of Britons changing their holiday habits, and moving away from the traditional European beach holiday. Recently released research from Cater Allen showed that 63 per cent of Brits wanted to go on long haul holidays, and 20 per cent stated that they wanted to go on holiday primarily for adventure.

Britons also appear active in their choices of holiday. 26 per cent wish to explore somewhere off the beaten track, while 22 per cent would holiday in the mountains, 10 per cent on safari, 11 per cent in the rainforest and 10 per cent on specialist activity holidays.

Richard Dunn, Managing Director at Cater Allen, said: "This research shows that Britons are moving away from the traditional European family holidays and becoming more adventurous in their holiday choices. However adventure style holidays can lead to potentially higher costs such as increased insurance, costs of adventure activities and fuel surcharges on long haul flights.

"With this in mind it is important to ensure that you are not paying unnecessary charges when you are using your card abroad. Cater Allen offers its international clients a multi-currency account which allows charge free transactions in the currency of transaction, and the potential to continue earning interest on your account."
