Five-star award winner makes ideal half-term haven Families booking at a five-star self-catering property in northern Cumbria this coming half-term holiday could find they’ve bagged themselves a stay at the North West’s self-catering establishment of the year.

The Lodge, at Hayton near Brampton, is at the heart of the natural environment, being a former shooting lodge lovingly reconverted to provide the visitor with total comfort, fabulous relaxation zones and more than a hint of luxury.

The Lodge can accommodate up to six guests, in three bedrooms : two double and one twin room that can convert to a double, if necessary. Two bedrooms have king-sized beds and en-suite shower rooms, whilst the twin/double room has an en-suite wet room with roll top bath.

This room has French doors leading to a patio and garden area that enables guests to breathe the fresh air afforded by a beautiful, rural location, or perhaps sit on the tree seat beneath the mature Weeping Ash. A full-length picture window from the oak-beamed lounge overlooks a garden water feature and box garden, whilst children will enjoy views of sheep grazing in the fields around the cottage.

The spacious leisure area, warmed by under-floor heating and a log fuelled wood-burning stove in chillier weather also come with comfortable sofas, colour TV/DVD, radio and CD player.

Beautiful aesthetic touches can be seen in the fixtures and furnishings, whilst the huge, stunning kitchen, complete with central breakfast bar, is a keen cook’s dream.

The property has already scooped Cumbria Tourism’s award for the best self-catering establishment and will find out whether it becomes the North West’s winner on October 22. Just days later, comes half-term week, for which The Lodge still has availability.

The Lodge is ideally situated for any family or group wishing to spend time in Hadrian’s Wall country, perhaps finding out more about Emperor Hadrian’s northern defence mechanism, if they have enjoyed the Hadrian exhibition at the British Museum.

It is also a haven for romantics or their family and friends, being located just 15 miles from the famous Blacksmith’s Shop, marriage room and legendary anvil, at Gretna Green.

Just a 100 metre stroll away lie Gelt Woods, in which hours of pleasure can be gained from strolling hundreds of acres of unspoilt paths. Nearby is Talkin Tarn Country Park, with its 65-acre lake, on which a variety of watersports can be enjoyed.

Historic Carlisle with its excellent Tullie House Museum and historic Castle and Cathedral, not to mention shops, is just eight miles away. Those preferring quirkier shopping experiences from independent shops can head to Penrith, reached within 30 minutes.

The single-storey property is ideal for families with young children, or for disabled guests, with easy access to all parts of the cottage.

The price of a stay at this magnificent self-catering cottage is £890 for half-term week, with rates dropping to as little as £450 in off peak periods. Short breaks can also be taken, with three, four and five night stays costing 65%, 75% and 85% of the full weekly tariff respectively.
