Amazonian adventures

23rd September 2008 Print
Brazil is a giant of a country, three times the size of Europe, making it impossible to see it all within the confines of a two week holiday. Trips Worldwide’s Highlights of Brazil tour picks out the best bits, and although travellers won’t be following the Amazon from source to sea like Bruce Parry, they will have the opportunity to stay in an Amazon jungle lodge, meet the local community, go piranha fishing and wildlife spotting.

Land in exuberant Rio, see the sights, including Corcovado and Sugar Loaf Mountain, during a full day city tour, with a further day at leisure. Next, visit the thundering Iguazu Falls, another of Brazil’s top hotspots, one which it shares with Argentina and Paraguay, as the falls straddle all three countries. Get to see both the Brazilian and Argentinean sides before transferring to the next watery highlight – the Amazon.

From lively Manaus, a major port 932 miles from the sea, deep in the Amazon basin, head via land and boat to Juma Lodge, base for the following two nights. Guests can take part in many activities around the lodge including alligator spotting, piranha fishing, a jungle hike and a visit to the local community.

Next, fly to Recife and transfer to Olinda (World Heritage), a colonial gem of a town overlooking the Atlantic, full of funky cafes, artisan workshops and galleries. The holiday concludes with two nights at Porto de Galinhas, one of Brazil’s most famous beaches outside of Rio, where optional diving, kayaking, snorkelling, horse riding and jeep safaris are all on offer.

The holiday costs from £2,375 p/p including scheduled flights, transfers, hotel accommodation, some meals and sightseeing.

Tours depart London daily – the best time to visit the Amazon is from May to November.
