Plan a spring time escape in medieval Tuscany

Invitation to Tuscany has a collection of ‘characteristically Italian’ villas, farmhouses and apartments in idyllic locations perfect for a getaway in April, May or June.Among them is a detached, mostly medieval house set just inside the walls of fascinating Volterra, one of Italy’s oldest cities. Sleeping four, Casa Selci is packed with original features including a marble staircase and a living room with magnificent cross-vaulted exposed brick ceiling. There is an enchanting walled garden that will be alive with the song of blackbirds, swallows and nightingales in the spring. Guests will find plenty of leafy spots to sit and read, eat or relax, while from May onwards the outdoor pool can be used. Beyond this little oasis the narrow winding streets of Volterra, with its beautiful buildings, interesting shops and excellent restaurants, is waiting to be explored. Seven-night rental in low-season (January 3-May 10) is £748 and mid-season (May10-June 28) £959.
The heart-lifting sight of frisky spring lambs in the adjoining field can be enjoyed from the extensive garden of Stretta Carraia, south of Siena, near Grosseto. A large house sleeping eight to ten, it has its origins in the 14th-century but has been restored and refurbished to provide all modern-day comforts without losing its traditional charm. It is reached down a country road leading past vineyards and olive groves. From its terraces there are views across to the stunning little Etruscan town of Pitigliano, with its bell-tower and castle. There is a private swimming pool. Weekly rental is £1,777 low-season and £2,329 mid-season.
