Follow in Moyles’ footsteps on the slopes of Kilimanjaro

22nd January 2009 Print
With Radio One DJ, Chris Moyles, looking to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, it's safe to say that anybody who is reasonably fit can attempt this African feat. One of nine celebrities participating in the February trek, the lad about town certainly enjoys a few pints, and there are numerous polls dedicated to predicting his chances of making it.

Most of the results come in at around 50/50, but since this is a Comic Relief gig, Acacia Adventure Holidays isn't shouting the odds. Instead, they will give five pounds to the charity if any adventurers booked on their Mount Kilimanjaro itineraries spot the DJ on the slopes, meaning travellers will not only get a buzz out of completing the climb - they will also be able to do their bit to eradicate global poverty.

Kate Plummer, Product and Marketing Co-ordinator at Acacia Adventure Holidays comments: "As a beer swilling party animal, Chris isn't your average climber, then again, you don't have to be a fitness freak to attempt the feat, and that's where most people go wrong. There are various routes to suits all levels; however, the most popular and easiest path to the summit is the Marangu climb. Our guess is that Chris will be opting for this route.

"Quite a few people wear hats on the trek as the temperature can drop quite dramatically so deeley boppers will certainly make Chris easy to spot - even if he's somewhere in the distance."

Acacia Adventure Holidays is requesting snaps of the Radio 1 DJ as proof; however, they'll be keeping an eye out for any dodgy Photoshop forgeries.

The tour operator is aware that the celebrity buzz will encourage all types of travellers to opt for the climb, not just in February, but year round. Adventurers booking any overland tour with Acacia Adventure Holidays of over two weeks duration will receive 25% off the tour price of any Marangu Route Mt. Kilimanjaro Trek.

The 7-day trip starts with an initial gentle gradient, trekking at low altitudes through forests and moorland. Accommodation is based in sleeping huts with beds. The trip starts and ends in Moshi and costs (including 25% discount) £400pp + local payment from £354pp. Daily departures. (Full price excluding local payment £534pp less 25% discount of £134pp). The price includes all highlights, national park fees, hut fees, rescue fees, accommodation, meals as indicated, services of mountain guide(s), driver, porters. Excludes, visas, water on first day of trek, travel insurance, flights, tips, departure taxes, airport transfers, sleeping bag and items of a personal nature.

If Chris wants to venture back to Africa on yet another charity jaunt, Acacia Adventure Holidays has the ideal trip lined up for the 24-hour party DJ. They are suggesting the 3-day Kingdom Of The Zulu adventure incorporating hiking and horse riding through the Drakensburg Mountains towards Lesotho.

The final destination is the highest pub in Africa - the perfect location for a swift half, especially at around 69p per pint. £474pp. Daily departures. The price includes all highlights, accommodation, transport, road tolls & taxes, meals as indicated, services of driver/guide. Excludes, visas, travel insurance, flights, airport transfers, departure taxes, tips, drinks & items of a personal nature, accommodation & dinners in Durban.
