Explore Patagonia

27th January 2009 Print
In the first of BBC2’s new Explore series, Simon Reeve leads a team of presenters on a journey through the spectacular landscapes of Argentina, from the vast ice fields of Patagonia to the wide-open plains of the Pampas.

To explore firsthand a wild corner of the Andes where ice and time have shaped an unbelievable landscape of breathtaking spires, dramatic glaciers, azure lakes and sub-Antarctic forests, join Walks Worldwide on its 19-day guided Patagonian Adventure from Buenos Aires, Los Glaciares NP and Laguna Torre glacier, to Chile's Torres del Paine and Argentina’s remote Tierra del Fuego Island. Tours depart Buenos Aires every Friday now until March 09.

After seeking out the juiciest steak and hottest tango venue in sultry, seductive Buenos Aires, head to Patagonia’s El Chalten, gateway to UNESCO Los Glaciares NP and beginning of the trek. From a lagoon campsite, trek through the dense forest to Chorillo Falls and Fitz Roy base camp for panoramic views of Cerro Poincenot and Mount Fitz Roy (3,441m). Visit Perito Moreno Glacier and watch giant icebergs crash into aquamarine waters below. Cross into Chile’s Torres del Paine NP, for the next leg of the journey.

Trek beneath the majestic Paine massif, a colossus of granite adorned with hanging glaciers, taking in ancient forests and views towards distant Andean ranges. Ascend to Las Torres base camp, a natural amphitheatre beneath vertical granite towers soaring 2,800m skyward, and picnic overlooking Grey Glacier, the largest and most spectacular glacier inside the park. On the final part of the journey travellers follow in the wake of early explorers, sailing across the Straits of Magellan to the ends of the earth, Tierra del Fuego before flying back to Buenos Aires.

The tour costs £2,395 p/p (land only) or from £3,195 p/p (with flights) including hotel, hosterias, refuge and camping accommodation, most meals, transfers, camping equipment and expert guiding.
