Up to 75% of Brits will reduce holiday budget in 2009

The majority of Brits plan to decrease their travel budget in 2009. This is the conclusion of the latest trivago survey which was answered by 3,489 users in December 2008 and January 2009. Abroad travellers are also tightening their belts with many believing the best way to save is by planning ahead to find the best deals.

35 percent of the Brits stated they will compare prices and plan ahead to save money this year. Six percent will save money by choosing a hotel with fewer stars and extras, the same percentage will travel less. Only two percent of British travellers are planning to fly less in 2009. Seven percent of Brits will stay in the United Kingdom, whereas three percent plan to save by reducing spending whilst on holiday.

15 percent will choose cheaper holiday destinations and only one percent of respondents will not go on any weekend breaks this year. 27 percent of the Brits plan to spend as much as usual on their holidays in 2009.

In other European countries, the most travellers stated they will compare all the available offers to lower their holiday costs. The Italians are on the look out for the best bargain: 42 percent compare all the offers available to reduce their holiday expenses. 31 percent of the Germans also stated that they will start saving money by comparing different deals. 14 percent of the Spaniards will save money by focusing on cheaper destinations. A quarter of the travellers from all the European countries surveyed stated they will spend as much as usual on their holidays in 2009.

The online survey ‘To save money on your holidays in 2009, where will you start?’ was answered by 3,489 visitors to trivago throughout December 2008 and January 2009.
