Adventures in Iceland’s remote wilderness

4th March 2009 Print
Winter thrill seekers can now explore Iceland’s remote southern interior for the first time with the launch of a new overnight expedition by Icelandic adventure specialist, Arctic Adventures.

The new tour is the first of its kind to visit Landmannalaugar, a popular summer hiking spot, during Iceland’s winter and off-season as it is not accessible by conventional vehicles. Adventurers get behind the wheel of a modified Super Defender, known in Iceland as ‘super jeeps’, which are equipped with huge 38inch tyres to drive across the snow, ice and rocky lava terrain to reach Landmannalaugar’s remote mountain huts.

En route the tour passes some of Iceland’s unique natural sights including Geysir hot springs, Gullfoss, Hjálparfoss and Háifoss waterfalls, followed by a refreshing dip in Landmannalaugar’s natural hot springs and supper of barbequed Icelandic lamb.

Arctic Adventure’s Landmannalaugar Winter Expedition costs from 99,990 Icelandic krona (around £615) per person and includes: pick up from Reykjavik, self drive super-jeeps including fuel for two days, mountain and super-jeep guides and all necessary equipment, sleeping bag, lunch and dinner on the first day, breakfast and lunch on the second day. Price excludes transportation form the UK. Tours depart most Tuesdays from 10 March, 2009, please visit the website for more details.
