Follow in the tyre marks of an unsung hero

One of the unsung heroes of the motoring world clocks up a centenary next month – the 100th anniversary of the first woman driver to cross the United States from coast to coast. Travellers can follow in her tyre marks on the Americana Road Trip with TrekAmerica.

Alice Huyler Ramsey set out on June 9th 1909 and took 59 days to drive the 3,800-mile journey from New York to San Francisco. She faced some tough obstacles along the way including potholes, punctured tyres and deep mud.
