A celebration of cycling

15th May 2009 Print
A celebration of cycling A national celebration of cycling takes place in the UK in June and to get into the mood Headwater has launched two new cycling holidays here this summer. More and more people are getting on their bikes as all ages are discovering the beauty of pedal power.

Discover how England punches above its weight in terms of range of attractions this summer with Roman battlefields, National Trust properties and Victorian farms on every corner. With the good news from the Met office, about a positive summer weather forecast, remaining in the UK this summer makes a “Staycation” far more attractive.

These new inspirational holidays feature gentle cycling through the heart of English villages and the two holidays are suitable for even the most occasional cyclists. Specially selected accommodation has been hand picked in some of England's finest and most historic privately run country inns and hotels, all with very welcoming owners in picturesque locations.

The Wye Valley Cycling Tour explores the beauty of Shropshire, Herefordshire and Powys in the Welsh/English borderlands. With two to four hours of cycling a day, this new cycling holiday, begins with a night in the slow food capital of England, Ludlow in Shropshire, a magnet for food and culture lovers everywhere. From Ludlow, cycle west into the Welsh Marches and Presteigne - the old county capital of Radnorshire. Spend two nights in Hay on Wye, world famous for over 50 bookshops and literary festival, before cycling back via the 16th century village of Kingsland and Herefordshire’s Norman churches and apple orchards.

This is perfect cycling country, with flexible routes packed with highlights including lazy watermills, gypsy caravans and ancient hilltop forts. A highlight is the gorgeous regency Swan coaching Inn in Hay on Wye. Prices start from £519 per adult, for six days (five nights) on a bed and breakfast basis in four stylish hotels, top quality bikes sized specially to suit plus a check and puncture demonstration, route notes and daily luggage transfers from hotel-to-hotel. Available daily from 17 May 2009 to 31 Oct 2009. Book online at Headwater.com.

Shropshire Castles Tour This new independent cycling holiday explores northern Shropshire’s varied landscapes and rich cultural heritage. Castles, fortresses and fortified country houses are scattered over this battle-scarred region like chaff, with history of conflicts ranging from Roman occupation to the English Civil War. To say life moves slowly here is an understatement – passengers on the Swansea to Shrewsbury line still flag the train down by hand! Stay in historic and memorable places, varying from Jacobean grandeur on Ludlow’s beautiful High Street to Edwardian splendour in Church Stretton. Dine out in the 'slow food' capital of Ludlow with its Michelin starred restaurants.
