A voyage of discovery on RMS St Helena

20th May 2009 Print
A voyage of discovery on RMS St Helena Experience a taste of the remote South Atlantic island of St Helena on board the RMS St Helena and join a seven-day mini voyage from Tenerife to Portland, Dorset departing September 21 2009 from £589 per person. One of the last working Royal Mail Ships, a voyage on the RMS allows passengers the opportunity to be part of history.

Fly to Tenerife where you’ll stay overnight before stepping aboard the RMS St Helena as she sets sail for Portland. The five day sea passage will allow you to experience true nostalgia and see how a working ship functions. A unique blend of passenger ship and cargo vessel, the 128-berth liner was purpose built specifically to serve St Helena. Welcoming on deck a mix of tourists and ‘Saints’, true friendships are formed and the relaxed, friendly atmosphere is similar to that found on the ships island namesake, St Helena - wholly reliant on the service of this ship for its very existence.

This traditional sea voyage on the RMS is a world away from the glitz of big cruise liners but themed cruises, quizzes, film nights and even frog racing ensure the entertainment is perfectly balanced. Passengers are well looked after on board with two bars, full service dining room, a sun deck, swimming pool, gymnasium and library to keep passengers entertained.

The short voyage between Tenerife and Portland includes accommodation on board the RMS St Helena, based on an A deck cabin with two sharing and all meals and entertainment on board. A one-way flight including tax from London Gatwick to Tenerife and one nights’ accommodation at the Hotel Stil Plaza Santa Cruz in Tenerife on a B&B basis are also included in the price. Departs UK on 21st September and arrives into Portland on 27th September, subject to availability at time of booking. Transfers not included.

A number of other voyages of varying length are also available with ports of call including Ascension Island, Walvis Bay, Cape Town and, of course, St Helena. The remote island of St Helena boasts stunning natural beauty and is steeped in history – perhaps best known as the place of Napoleon’s exile, but also with a fascinating war history with around 6,000 Boer prisoners of war imprisoned on the Island. The island remains accessible only by ship and getting to the island is as much of an experience as the destination itself.
