From October to mid-November, hundreds of bears make their way towards Cape Churchill on the shore of Hudson Bay. There they wait until the ice is strong enough to support them in the hunt for their favourite food, seals.
Nearby Churchill (pop. 900) calls itself the ‘Polar Bear Capital of the World’ – it even has a "polar bear jail" where delinquents who loiter in town for food are tranquillised and held pending release back into the wild when the bay freezes. It’s from a base in one of Churchill’s comfortable hotels that you’ll observe these beautiful and fearless animals (over 2 metres tall and up to 600 kilos) over three days, from the safety, warmth and comfort of a specially-designed tundra vehicle.
Polar bears live mostly solitary lives, but migration is a sociable time and alliances between bears are made before the competitive seal hunting season starts. You’ll see the bears sparring, suckling their young and jumping on the ice to test its strength. Curious members of the bear community will approach the vehicle and inspect it from close range. With a maximum group size of 15 in a vehicle built to accommodate twice as many, there’s ample room to view and photograph the bears.
Lunch and refreshments are provided so as to maximise bear-viewing satisfaction. As well as bears you may see Arctic Fox, Caribou, Snowy Owls and Ptarmigan. Husky dog sledding excursions can be arranged and there’s every chance of a spectacular view of the Northern Lights.
