Off the beaten track in Africa

3rd June 2009 Print
Tour operator African & Indian Explorations specialise in ‘off the beaten track’ experiences, handcrafted safaris and once in a lifetime holidays and are delighted to offer the Selous Wilderness Camp, opening 15th July 2009 in the Selous Game Reserve, still a remote and untamed slice of ‘Old Africa’.

This new 7-tented camp, set on the banks of the Rufiji River offers privileged game viewing either on foot, by boat or by vehicle, away from the maddening crowds and off the beaten track of the well-worn safari circuits. The camp is set along the palm-fringed edges of the wide, meandering Rufiji River, one of the largest water systems in East Africa. With its associated wetlands, lakes and swamps, it is one of the most outstanding ecological systems in the whole of Eastern Africa. Due to this unique ecosystem the Selous Game Reserve was designated as a World Heritage site.

Over half of Tanzania’s elephants, approx. 60,000, live in the Selous ecosystem where they roam the miombo forests, savannahs and thickets which they share with over 150,000 buffalo, 40,000 hippos, 1,500 wild dogs, 3,000 to 4,000 lions as well as several hundred thousand plains game. Although the Selous is best known for its spectacular mammals - especially elephants bathing and criss-crossing the Rufiji River - it is equally celebrated for its abundant and varied bird life.

Another Selous “speciality” are the many hippos and crocodiles. There is a myriad of bird life around the constantly changing pattern of the sandbanks, oxbow lakes, lagoons and channels along the Rufiji River where Selous Wilderness Camp is located. The river scenery around the new camp is made all the more spectacular by the dense riparian forests dotted with groves of borassus palms with their majestically swaying fronds.
