A magical walk through Madeira

16th June 2009 Print
A magical walk through Madeira The magical island of Madeira often referred to as ‘The Pearl of the Atlantic’ and ‘The Floating Garden’ is a perfect walking holiday destination. Britain’s leading specialist operator for guided walks throughout the World, offer one or two week holidays in Madeira from £675 per person, including return flights, transfers, half-board accommodation and the services of a tour leader.

The one week holiday is based purely on Funchal with moderate walks in the main but some which are a bit more challenging and require a head for heights. The two week holiday is split between Porto Moniz (three nights) on the north western coast of Madeira; Ribeira Brava (five nights) in the west and the capital, Funchal (six nights).

The scenery in Madeira is stunningly beautiful and readily accessible for the most moderate rambler. Several walks take one along ‘Levadas’ – waterways ingeniously engineered both over and through the rock to carry water from high mountain springs. Others explore peaceful mountain valleys and follow the line of rugged sea cliffs.

The varying altitudes of Madeira are home to a wealth of spectacular indigenous flora in addition to a plethora or other species introduced to the island. Many of these are best displayed around the bay of Funchal.
