Ranch Rider goes off the beaten track

1st July 2009 Print
Dude ranches have always been popular with travellers, whether expert equestrians or greenhorns, but what about getting off the beaten track in North America? Ranch Rider has the ideal option for novices wanting to ride the less well-travelled trails and a horse drive that is perfect for the more experienced rider.

Begin your western adventure with a ride through the Mystic Valley. A thrilling horseback holiday for greenhorns, the pace is more of a gentle lope when compared to the usual pack trip. The expedition also includes a journey to Mystic Pass and stop at Mystic Lake – an ideal spot for anglers. Hearty Western fare and campfire cookouts round the pit make for a truly authentic cowboy experience.

After hiking, fishing or simply relaxing in the wilderness novices can swap the saddle for the seat of an automobile and take in the beauty of Alberta by car. Major highlights include driving along the Icefield Parkway, one of the most scenic drives in North America, Black Bear trekking at Blackcomb Mountain and whale watching on Vancouver Island. 13-night trip (including 2-night pack trip) £1,249pp including accommodation, car hire and pack trip. Return flight from £585pp.

Experienced equestrians can also hit the trail in Idaho, where they will round up and drive a herd of horses through 60 miles of open backcountry. The 6-night expedition includes a full orientation and a colt-starting clinic at the Warm Creek Cow Camp. Riders can also choose to extend their holiday and add on a bespoke self drive, allowing them to see more of this spectacular Rocky Mountain state.

Medicine Lodge Horse Drive (ranchrider.com/chdrives.asp) only £709pp including 20% discount (save £175pp). Transfers £65pp Idaho Falls/£115pp from Jackson. Available dates from now through November. 7-night add on self drive £525pp including accommodation and car hire. Return flight from £499pp.

Please note: all prices unless otherwise stated include full board accommodation, transfers, gratuities and all ranch based riding and activities.
