Explore the Alps and experience traditions alive

7th July 2009 Print
Explore the Alps and experience traditions alive It is a sight to behold and a true example for the preservation of tradition - every year in September, thousands of cows are brought down from their summer alpine pastures high up in the mountains and treated like celebrity on their return to the valley. Head for Oberstdorf in the Southern Bavarian Allgäu region where this event will take place on 11 and 12 September.

The so-called “Viehscheid” is the yearly highlight for the locals who dress up in their traditional costume and together with thousands of visitors witness how the cows arrive back in the valley where they are being separated to be returned to their owners. The cow drive down to Oberstdorf is followed by a folk fair, oompah music, beer and local food included.

The late summer is also a perfect time for exploring Oberstdorf’s over 200 km of hiking trails including easy walks, alpine treks, climbing option and the famous 400 peaks panorama on the “Nebelhorn” mountain. Special “hiking unlimited” offers include a ticket for unlimited use of the region’s mountain railways and gondolas:

Three nights for two people in self-catering accommodation start from EUR 184 while three nights in a three star hotel can be booked from EUR 215 per person.
