Surviving the wild – Unusual holidays

24th July 2009 Print
Surviving the wild – Unusual holidays The late Australian crocodile hunter Steve Irwin paved the way for unusual adventure hunters. Now following in his footsteps British adventurer Bear Grylls, bushcraft and survival expert Ray Mears and South African snake man Austin J Stevens all search for adrenaline filled expeditions as they visit new and exciting countries all over the world.

If you are looking for a taste of adventure closer to home this summer, then why not try an unusual holiday and take part in Lawrence Clark’s bushcraft activity events at Glen Tanar Estate, set in the heart of Royal Deeside and in the Cairngorms National Park. Lawrence is one of just a handful of people actually trained to full instructor level by Ray Mears on the subject of bushcraft and survival and worked with Ray for 6 years.

Lawrence Clark says, “I run regular bushcraft activities at Glen Tanar Estate which include teaching visitors how to comfortably live in the wilderness by using the resources that nature provides. Shelter buildings, outback cooking and tracking are a few of the many subjects that we cover. The events are educational but also a fun way to spend time this summer outdoors. Bushcraft is about being practical and resourceful and the wilderness has something of value to give to everyone.”

Lawrence continues, “I am lucky enough to have been taught by Ray Mears who has become recognised throughout the world as being an authority on the subject of bushcraft and survival. My events are for anyone who wants a taste of the great outdoors and the aim is to show how rewarding and enjoyable bushcraft can be. Our activity events are perfect for couples, families, children and even team building for corporate days out.”

Claire Bruce, owner of the Glen Tanar Estate comments: “We are extremely lucky to have the first hand skills of Lawrence. Our bushcraft activities provide a fun take on surviving in the wild but also teach everyone, from small children to grandparents, practical skills which they can use if they are ever required. We invite adventurers to join our campfire, taste some camp fire cooking and experience the outdoors. Lawrence will lead adventurers through the survival arts of making shelters and various methods of fire-making as well as educating visitors on how many useful trees and plants there are all around us.”

Set in the heart of Royal Deeside and in the Cairngorms National Park, the Glen Tanar Estate offers a wealth of activity for visitors including walks, cycling, riding and trout and salmon fishing. There are six self catering cottages on Glen Tanar Estate, which can accommodate a total of 28 guests. The Glen Tanar Ballroom is available for functions from Weddings to Conferences.
