Camping with a difference in Botswana
Ker & Downey Botswana has upgraded the tents at Kanana enabling it to achieve five star grading to keep it in line with its other two luxury camps, Shinde and Okuti. At Kanana guests are accommodated in seven spacious, twin-bedded tents and one honey moon tent , set on raised teak decks, offering breathtaking views across the waterways.
Dependent on the annual floods, the level of water transforms this dry camp into a true water experience and in the early months of the year you may actually enjoy the visible spectacle of the water rising around the camp. All tents offer en-suite bathrooms with hot and cold running water, shower and flush toilet. The tents are well spaced affording privacy, whilst still being within comfortable distance from the central dining and lounge area.
The Kanana Concession encompasses a necklace of islands on the Xudum River in the more remote reaches of the Okavango Delta. It is an exciting and beautiful area particularly on the islands, which you will explore during your stay. The beautiful luxury camp is built amongst spectacular shade trees of ebony, knobthorn acacia and the sausage species. Accommodation is in traditional deluxe tents with en-suite facilities, raised on decking offering views onto the floodplains. The dining and sitting areas are also raised on decking and encircle a massive ancient fig tree, which is the focal point of the camp’s public area.
Within the concession, the hillocks of grass-covered islands formed by fertile eroded termite hills are dotted with fig, palm and other trees, providing shade and a lookout for predators to spot their prey on the floodplain. This idyllic setting makes for exciting game walks and offers some of the best areas in the Delta for exploring by mokoro (canoe) and by motorboat when the water levels are high. Boating is an ideal way to sample the varied bird life with particular reference to the breeding heronry situated within the concession, one of the most active breeding heronries in southern hemisphere (breeding occurs in spring/summer months). In addition, one can also explore the area on game drives and night drives year round.
