Beading on The Battlefields

7th March 2007 Print
Zulu Lady Experience the first ever Battlefields Beading Workshop, whilst enjoying the beauty of the Isandlwana Battlefield landscape, warm hospitality and the relaxed atmosphere of the Lodge.

The weekend will include four sessions by Zulu Beadwork specialist Marilee Wood and a Battlefield tour led by Rob Gerrard, resident historian at the Lodge.

The first session begins at 2PM on Friday, the 1st of June and concludes with lunch on Sunday, the 3rd of June.

Marilee Wood, an archaeologist, developed a passion for Zulu beadwork in the early 1980’s. While living in Brussels, she documented the Southern African beadwork collection at the Musée Royale pour L’Afrique Centrale in Tervuren. This began many years of research in museum collections in Europe, South Africa and the United States. She has given talks on southern African beadwork in Japan, the United States and South Africa.

Rob Gerrard, who has authored a number of books on the Anglo Zulu and Anglo Boer Wars is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and has been resident historian at the Lodge since shortly after it opened in 1999. His presentations are spine tingling and he often moves people to tears with the human interest stories of people involved on both sides of the battle.
