Symphony in the Flint Hills, Kansas

The Second Annual Symphony in the Flint Hills Concert will be held on June 16 in the Wade Pasture of the Schwarting Ranch located at the headwaters of Mill Creek in the uplands above Lake Wabaunsee near Gunbarrel Hill. Across this expanse lies an old trail that once ran on the divide between the Wakarusa, Neosho, Osage and Kaw rivers.

Native Americans had used the route, a natural highway that avoided stream crossings, for centuries.

Through the afternoon, concertgoers may participate in a variety of activities included in the ticket price, such as:

• Wildflower/prairie walks with Native Plant Society guides
• Birding with Audubon Society members
• Historic re-enactments
• Discussions of ranch life in the 1880s by regional historians and folklorist
• Old-time authentic cowboys telling tales
• Explanations of geology, water and the natural character of the Flint Hills
• Rides in horse-drawn wagons
• Musical instrument “Petting Zoo”
• Presentations of regional Native American culture

Returning for the 2007 celebration, the Kansas City Symphony will fill the air with music that evokes the Spirit of the Prairie. Symphonies from composers Copland, Beethoven, Barry, Dvorak, Thompson and Broughton are among those being considered for the 2007 event.
