Battlefield specialist launches Falklands War tour
A new holiday – the first of its kind – to mark this year’s 25th anniversary of The Falklands War has been launched by Leger Holidays, the UK’s leading specialist battlefield tour operator. The 12-day holiday is the first available from the UK to commemorate one of the most significant military events of the last 50 years which started on 2 April, 1982 when Argentina invaded the British dependency 8,000 miles from home soil.
This remarkable and unique tour has a comprehensive itinerary incorporating most of the key sites from the campaign explored across six full days of battlefields visits, all accompanied by experienced local guides.
Starting from Heathrow, the holiday begins with an overnight stay in Santiago, Chile before flying to the Falkland Islands’ for an eight-day stay.
The guided tours include visits to many of the evocative names reported by the British media during the ten-week conflict: Fitzroy, Goose Green, Port Stanley and Pebble Island.
As well as guided tours of the battlefields themselves – remarkable in that many of the war artefacts are still in place – the package includes flights to and from Pebble Island, the site of one of the campaign’s most dramatic events when the British SAS raided the enemy-occupied airstrip.
As well as low level flights on nine-seater Falkland Islands Government Air Service planes to Pebble Island, the package includes internal flights to Port Howard and Stanley.
Also included is a full-day, four-wheel-drive guided excursion of the Fitzroy and Stanley area taking in yet more household name sites such as Tumbledown, William, Harriet and Two Sisters.
Holidaymakers will visit British and Argentine war cemeteries, memorials to the Sir Galahad and Sir Tristram, the 1982 war museum, and see wreckage from the likes of Lear Jets, Mirages, Sky Hawks, Daggers and helicopters – there’s even the chance for dolphin-spotting in the harbour at Port Howard.
The dates on two of the available holidays – May 17 and November 22 – have been chosen to coincide with a number of important anniversary events and ceremonies commemorating The Falklands War.
