Liberation Festival success for leading Jersey attraction
Jersey War Tunnels, one of Jersey’s leading attractions, is toasting the success of the island’s first Liberation Festival. The attraction, which tells the true story of the German Occupation of Jersey during World War Two, reports that for the Liberation Festival period 5-9 May 2007 their footfall has significantly increased on the same period last year. The Liberation Festival was a gala celebration conceived by Jersey Tourism which comprised a long weekend of activities based around the Liberation of Jersey from German Occupation on 9th May 1945. From 5th to 9th May, there was a host of events for local residents and visitors to enjoy, including heritage tours and themed walks, open bunkers and classic coach tours.
Jersey War Tunnels celebrated the Liberation Festival by turning its café into a 1940s eatery called ‘We’ll Eat Again’. The team hung blackout curtains at the doors and windows, filled the café with 1940s memorabilia and wore period costumes. Footage from the era was shown in the background while live performances of wartime songs and dancing filled the space.
Paul Simmonds, Chief Executive, Jersey War Tunnels, commented:
“I am delighted to announce that during the Liberation Festival our footfall increased by 40 per cent on the same period last year. It shows that sustained island-wide event led activity is of great interest to both visitors and islanders alike. I am pleased that the Liberation Festival has gained momentum and is now a key part of our island’s unique events programme. It is important that this period is marked to inform young islanders and visitors of this very special time in our history.”
