Britain’s beefcakes battle it out at Butlins

19th June 2007 Print
Butlins, Britain’s best-loved holiday company, is preparing to welcome the country’s hunks as they bid to become ‘Britain’s Strongest Man 2007’. The Butlins Resort at Minehead is hosting the well renowned IMG event to find out who will represent the country at the MET-Rx World’s Strongest Man event later this year.

Following in the footsteps of some of the greatest sportsmen, competitors will battle it out in a variety of gruelling events to test their strength and stamina after a series of regional heats held across the UK and Ireland.

They will compete in four heats with the top two from each going through to an eight man final. The whole event takes place at Butlins Minehead and the surrounding areas, 24th – 29th June, and is due to be broadcast on Channel Five later in the year. TWI, the sport production arm of the world’s premier sport, entertainment and media company IMG, is staging the event and making the TV shows for Five.

The twenty competitors, including Mark Felix and Darren Sadler “The Mighty Atom”, will face a raft of challenges including racing against the clock in the famous Atlas Stones, testing their speed and power with the Fingal Fingers challenge and showing their super strength with the Safe Lift.

Darren Hollis, Resort Director of Butlins Minehead said: “The facilities at Butlins Minehead are perfect for an event such as Britain’s Strongest Man and West Somerset is such a beautiful area with sandy beaches, wonderful bays and, of course, Exmoor National Park. We’re pleased TWI is bringing the event back to our Resort, our guests thoroughly enjoy watching the various challenges and the competitors and their families always have a great time here, it feels as though the event is coming home”

TWI's Managing Director, Sport Production, Graham Fry said: 'Its great news that Britain's Strongest Man is back on the screen. It was a TV fixture for many years and we’re thrilled that the recent success of World’s Strongest Man on Five has encouraged them to extend the visibility of the sport of strongman to the British viewing public. Of course the winner will automatically qualify for WSM and it’s our hope that this model can be recreated in other countries around the world resulting in a bigger and even better World's Strongest Man competition for years to come'.

All holidaymakers can enjoy the event for free while event fans can visit the Resort by purchasing a Day Visitor Pass. Visitors wanting to make a holiday out of the event and see the full final, can book a break starting 24th – 29th June.
