Rome hosts Movie Stars exhibition
From 17th October 2007 to 13th January 2008, the Carlo Bilotti Museum – Orangery of Villa Borghese will play host to the “Movie Stars” exhibition. For decades, the icons of contemporary cinema, the best-known actors, the shyest directors, and the most fashionable stars of the day have sat in front of Timothy Greenfield-Sanders’ large format camera. His portraits will be exhibited for the first time in Rome next autumn.50 images of actors and directors – shot between 1976 and 2007 – will form the basis of “Movie Stars: Portraits by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders” an exhibition at the Carlo Bilotti Museum (Orangery of Villa Borghese) from Wednesday 17th of October 2007 to Tuesday 13th of January 2008. This exhibition will coincide with the “Cinema Festa Internazionale di Roma”, the second international cinema festival in Rome. T
he exhibition – curated by Gianni Mercurio – is sponsored by the Town Council Department of Cultural Policy in Rome, supported by Fondazione TramontanoArte and organised by Zètema Progetto Cultura. All photographs in the exhibition were printed by EPSON USA.
“Movie Stars: Portraits by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders” will feature 50 black and white as well as colour photographs ranging in size from 70x50 cm to 180x150 cm. Timothy Greenfield-Sanders’ portraits for this exhibition will be comprised of the actors and directors who over the last 40 years have ennobled cinema both in front of and behind the movie camera.
Directors in the exhibition include the legendary and seminal figures Orson Welles and Alfred Hitchcock, the outspoken and irrepressible Spike Lee, and the publicity shy and reclusive Woody Allen, whose portrait was taken especially for this exhibition. In addition to mythical figures, the present and future of cinema will also be on view through Greenfield-Sanders’ portraits of Darren Aronofsky and Wes Anderson, two highly regarded young U.S. directors and screenwriters.
Actors and actresses will comprise seventy-five percent of the work in “Movie Stars: Portraits by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders”. The stunningly seductive Nicole Kidman, the glamorous and enchanting Julianne Moore, the youthful and edgy Rose McGowan and the ever-independent and creative John Malkovich exemplify of the broad overview of this exhibition. Italy’s captivating Valeria Golino – one of the country’s best actresses – will hang in this international context along with the glittering, the talented and the beautiful.
Timothy Greenfield-Sanders’ portraits are in the collections of numerous international cultural institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, the Getty Museum, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. His portraits of celebrities, artists, film, rock and porn stars, writers, and American presidents have been published worldwide. He is a “contributing photographer” to Vanity Fair Magazine as well.

With simple facial expressions and elegant body poses, Greenfield-Sanders’ subjects express their human and artistic uniqueness, qualities that have made them famous, emulated and loved by film fans worldwide. Portrait highlight include Woody Allen’s self-parody, Rachel Weisz’ British elegance, Wes Anderson’s peculiar humour tinged with a slight sadness, and Helen Mirren’s strength of character.
This exhibition – a timely compliment to the concurrent International Film Festival in Rome – presents the film world in a direct and straightforward manner, merging cinema stars of the past and present and highlighting their common qualities; talent, love of art, self-expression, and skilled communication. In addition, the Carlo Bilotti Museum – in the Orangery of Villa Borghese – is a unique and prestigious setting.
Recent retrospectives at the Carlo Bilotti Museum include the work of the world renowned artists Willem de Kooning, Damien Hirst, Jenny Saville and David Salle. “Movie Stars: Portraits by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders will link the film and the art world through these exceptional portraits.
