Minehead hosts European Tug of War Championships

10th September 2007 Print
Tug of War Championships The European Outdoor Tug of War Championships will be held at Minehead Football Club, on the edge of Exmoor in Somerset from Thursday 20 – Sunday 23 September. Around 1,500 competitors are taking part, each hoping their team will be crowned European Champions.

Her Royal Highness, Princess Royal, Princess Anne will be attending Friday, 21 September when she will meet the organisers and participants.

The championships will be held in weight classes for both men’s and ladies with the objective of pulling the opposing team a distance of four metres. There is no time limit for a pull, and matches can last for a few seconds or a few minutes, depending on the standard and experience of the teams. The highlight of the match is the clash of sheer power between two teams. Athletes seek an optimal foothold in the ground by digging in their heels, and, using that as their pivot, pull the rope, which requires all round physical strength and fitness, as well as endurance and stamina.

Spectators are welcome to come and watch the exciting spectacle with competitions starting at 9.30am and 1pm on all four days; admission is £5 per person per day.
