Hop along from steam to stream

17th September 2007 Print
Steam Weekend A weekend of fun awaits visitors to the Southern Lake District, as the award winning Aquarium of the Lakes, on Windermere, combines with its neighbour, the Lakeside and Haverthwaite railway, to lay on a From Steam to Stream Weekend.

Kids are already building up a head of steam for the weekend of fun (September 22-23). The Froggy Express will depart from Haverthwaite Station for Lakeside at various times during this weekend, from 10.40 am onwards. All children on board will receive an exciting 'From Steam to Stream' goody bag, full of special treats and a bumper quiz sheet to get the brain cells working.

On arrival at Lakeside, families can head into the Aquarium, to delve into the intriguing freshwater world around Windermere that makes this attraction unique. Children can revel in watching otters at play, seeing huge carp swim over their heads in the underwater tunnel and waiting for the diving ducks to perform their underwater tricks.

From cute harvest mice, to menacing pike and from red-eared terrapins to relatively rare Arctic Char, the Aquarium has something for everyone. Visitors over this weekend will also be some of the first to see its new creatures - Red Eyed and Asian Tree Frogs, a Striped-Kneed Tarantula and a Cuban Boa. These, along with fish such as Tetra, Cichlids, Cherry and Tiger Barb and Clown Loach, are now at home in the Riverbank at Night zone, within a Lakes of the World area.

Exciting craft activities will also be staged in the Aquarium during the From Steam to Stream weekend, allowing younger visitors to express themselves creatively and bring watery themes to life. Two shops and a café benefiting from fabulous views over Windermere can also add to the day’s experience.

Tickets for this special weekend of fun for all the family cost £9.45 for an adult, £5.65 for a child aged 5-15 and nothing for Tiddlers under 5, prices covering both the train journey and Aquarium entrance fee. Tickets are only available from the Haverthwaite Railway station, on the day.

More details about the Aquarium can be found at Aquariumofthelakes.co.uk with railway timetables available at Lakesiderailway.co.uk.
