Ironbridge hosts Blacksmiths Experience Day If you have ever fancied having a go on a blacksmith’s anvil, then this is your chance. The historic wrought ironworks at Blists Hill Victorian Town in the Ironbridge Gorge, Shropshire is the setting for a brand new Blacksmithing Experience Day. Dates are planned through the autumn to March 2008.

By the end of the day those taking part will have gained a practical insight into the art of blacksmithing and will have made several unique pieces to take home as souvenirs of their experience.

The informal sessions, which are strictly limited to six people and last a full day, cost £100 per person to include all materials, expert tuition with the museum’s blacksmith, a pub lunch, morning coffee and afternoon tea.

The sessions are available to anyone aged over 16, no previous experience or particular strength is necessary. They will take place in an undercover area which is unheated so participants should dress appropriately (layers are recommended). Protective equipment will be provided but attendees should come wearing stout footwear.

Places on the experience days must be pre-booked with the Ironbridge Tourist Information Centre by emailing tic@ironbridge.org.uk. Any special dietary requirement should be advised at the time of booking.

Blists Hill Victorian Town is one of the ten Ironbridge Gorge Museums; for further information visit Ironbridge.org.uk. The Gorge is easily reached via the M6 and M54 motorways exiting at Telford (M54 junction 4 or 6).
