City shops to mountain tops in Innsbruck

30th November 2007 Print
City shops to mountain tops in Innsbruck Europe’s first and only funicular and cable way system from city shops to mountain tops opens on 1st December in Innsbruck, taking visitors from the city centre to the peak of the Hafelkar mountain in only 20 minutes.

The new Nordkettenbahnen funicular links up with a cable car at the Hungerburg station, giving visitors the further option of riding right the way up to 2269 metres. The spectacular appearance of the four city centre stations for the funicular link up to the gondola is the work of London based award winning architect Zaha Hadid, whose firm has also designed the new bridge across the river Inn, an `S’-shaped steel construction with two 34 metre high pylons.

The new rail and gondola link up the Seegrube will make Innsbruck's Nordkette mountain region accessible both in winter and in summer.
