A race to the lowest point on earth
Jordan will bear witness to some of the world’s greatest marathon runners as they go head-to-head in a race to the lowest point on earth during the 15th Dead Sea Ultra Marathon on Friday, 11th April.Held in conjunction with the Society for the Care of Neurological Patients (SCNP) and Amman Road Runners, the Dead Sea Ultra Marathon is a gruelling test of endurance with more than 2500 participants from different countries expected to participate.
Competitors begin from the capital city of Jordan, Amman, and gradually over the 48.7 kilometre course make their way down some 400 metres below sea level to the shores of the Dead Sea. As the altitude drops the temperature rises ranging from around 15° C (60° F) at the start of the event to 25° C (80° F) by the time contestants reach the tape at the finish!
Over the past decade several world record runners and champions have participated in the Dead Sea Ultra Marathon. Last year saw more than 1600 runners from 48 different countries take part establishing the race on the international scene.
The Dead Sea Ultra Marathon is divided into three events: the half marathon of 21km, the standard marathon which is 42km and the ultra-marathon topping the bill at 48.7 hot kilometres along tarmac roads with no shade! Runners can take part individually or within a team of four. A total amount of JD 4,200 in cash prizes will be distributed amongst the top three winners of each run.
The Dead Sea Ultra Marathon is the main fund raising event for the SCNP, which provides neurological patients with medical aid and covers the costs of necessary surgeries for the needy.
