Anniversary Ghost Festival to take place at Bisham Abbey

2nd April 2008 Print
Anniversary Ghost Festival to take place at Bisham Abbey Fright Nights, the UK’s leading ghost hunt specialist, is organising a Ghost Festival at Bisham Abbey on Saturday 10 May. The Festival, which will take place from 7pm – 12pm, will celebrate six years of holding ghost themed events at the 800 year old Abbey. Mentioned in the Doomsday Book, Bisham Abbey played host to Henry VIII and the exiled Elizabeth I. With a building steeped in so much history, it’s of no surprise that the Abbey is reputed to be the third most haunted building in the country.

Besides having a holy well, Bisham Abbey also has a secret passage where spectral lights have been seen hovering. Over the years, many have seen the lights "dancing across the lawn". It is said that on a midsummer evening an eerie blue mist seeps from the Abbey and rolls across the Thames to the meadows southwest of Marlow. The ghost that regularly haunts the building is that of Lady Hoby, who once lived at the Abbey and whose remorse for her dead son carried on long after her death.

Many of the Abbey’s guests have seen Lady Hoby as she’s torn blankets from beds and thrown objects around rooms. On some occasions she’s even been known to threaten guests. Lady Hoby can be recognised from her portrait which hangs in the Abbey, except with one unusual difference. The ghost is always seen in the negative, that is, with a white dress but with black hands and face.

The Ghost Festival will enable the public to take part in ghost hunting vigils in the Abbey’s most haunted areas with experienced clairvoyants and paranormal investigators. Costumed storytellers will regale the group with the ‘Ghosts of Bisham Abbey’ and talks and demonstrations will run throughout the night by some of Britain's leading experts and mediums. The Ghost Festival also includes a Psychic Fair featuring a range of paranormal stalls along with Birds of Prey demonstrations.

Martin Jeffrey, Director of Fright Nights stated, “We’re delighted to host our first Ghost Festival at Bisham Abbey which have proved extremely popular to anyone with an interest in the paranormal. The public will have the chance to visit some of the Abbey’s most haunted rooms and hopefully catch a glimpse of the paranormal including the infamous Lady Hoby. As with all our ghost hunts, people must be pre-warned that anything could happen when they set foot inside this haunted and historic building.”

Tickets for the Ghost Festival are priced at just £20 per person and can be purchased online at Frightnights.co.uk. Please note the Ghost Festival is for over 18’s only.
