Wing your way to Queensland’s Fraser Island

8th April 2008 Print
Wing your way to Queensland’s Fraser Island From May 10-17 the who’s who of the bird watching fraternity will flock to Queensland’s Fraser Island to bump binoculars with eagle-eyed holiday makers during the annual 'Bird Week' festivities at Kingfisher Bay Resort.

Fraser Island’s diverse coastal, wetland and rainforest habitats support some 354-recorded bird species, including a number considered rare or vulnerable, which make the island and 'Bird Week' a birder’s dream and the month of May a fun time for UK holidaymakers to duck over to Queensland.

Now in its seventh year, 'Bird Week' blends ‘birds and nature’ perfectly into a program of activities including dawn bird walks, hikes, 4WD tours, night walks, sketching, painting and photography classes, workshops on biodiversity, conservation, bird identification and other topical issues, as well as thought-provoking and entertaining evening presentations.

Over the weekends of 10-11 May and 17-18 May, junior birders will have the chance to enhance their birding knowledge in a fun environment, with specially-themed Junior Eco Ranger activities including mask making, nest building and bird tracking.

Holidaymakers can rediscover the birds of Fraser - the rarely seen Powerful Owl and Black-breasted Button-quail, Noisy Pitta, brilliant Azure, Forest and Sacred Kingfishers as well as Red Goshawks and 17 other birds of prey - and all the island’s natural delights from the comfort of award-winning Kingfisher Bay Resort.

'Bird Week' accommodation packages start from $969AUD* per person, twin share and include catamaran transfers, seven nights resort hotel accommodation, welcome dinner and drinks, 'Galah' Dinner and Ranger-guided nature walks.

Guest presenters include author and all-round funnyman Sean Dooley and Flinders University Lecturer Jeremy Robertson alongside wildlife artists Janet Flinn and Janet Matthews and wildlife photographer and tutor Darran Leal.

This 'Bird Week' Kingfisher Bay Resort will also welcome acclaimed Australian birder, photographer and award-winning author, Raoul Slater, as a Guest Presenter during the week-long celebrations.

Walks, cruises and 4WD excursions leave from Kingfisher Bay Resort and visit habitats from wallum to rainforest, marine to wetland and mangrove to bush, introducing guests to the amazing diversity of Fraser Island and Hervey Bay and challenging attendees to increase the number of bird species recorded.

All activities build towards a feather ruffling climax - the pink and silver themed 'Galah' Dinner, held on Friday, May 16. Guest speaker Sean Dooley leads a light-hearted look back at the soaring highs and lows of the week.
