Blue Flag flies high on Eastbourne’s seafront

Eastbourne’s prestigious seafront has been awarded the Blue Flag for a 5th year in succession by environmental charity, Encams, and the esteemed accolade is testament to the town’s first class beaches.

The Blue Flag has been flying high on Eastbourne seafront every year since 2004. It acknowledges the seaside resort’s safe bathing and excellent facilities and indicates that the town meets stringent EU water quality directives. An international award, the Blue Flag is an instant guarantee for visitors that Eastbourne beach is officially one of the best in the world.

Eastbourne Borough Council Spokesperson for Tourism, Cllr Steve Wallis said “This is fantastic news for the town and perfect timing for the busy summer months ahead. With the beach huts a sell out success already this year, the sunloungers, kids’ deckchairs and double deckchairs, mean there are plenty of options for making the most of Eastbourne’s Blue Flag beach and bathing in our famous rays.”

Named the sunniest place in the country by a Halifax Quality of Life Survey in 2007 with an average 34.6 hours of sunshine a week, Eastbourne is already heading to beat that record in 2008. With a sunshine filled May, Eastbourne’s Blue Flag beach has seen a very busy start to the summer, including a dramatic lifeguard rescue, an appearance from BBC Breakfast, and hundreds of Kidzsafe wristbands given out to schools.

With the Bandstand season also underway after a record year in 2007, a colourful concert programme will keep visitors busy in the evenings at the premier outdoor entertainment venue on the south coast. With rock ‘n’ roll concerts, Tribute Nights and 1812 Firework nights, the Bandstand programme offers a variety of sounds to entertain the whole family every day of the week.

The seafront action continues throughout the summer, as Fort Fun theme park teams up with Eastbourne Borough Council to offer an adrenaline-fuelled weekend at Eastbourne Extreme in July, plus the return of the biggest seafront airshow in the world, Airbourne, bursting into the skies in August.
