Awaken your sense of adventure on the real treasure island

11th July 2008 Print
Awaken your sense of adventure on the real treasure island Dive deep off Bermuda and discover a forgotten world beneath the ocean. Bermuda has one shipwreck for every day of the year. 365 of them, spanning five centuries, sleep in the waters surrounding the island’s famous beaches.

Located just six and half hours from the UK, this stunning paradise island is a divers dream come true. Beneath the clear Atlantic waters of Bermuda’s coast is a mystical world with over 200 square miles of stunning coral reef, blue holes, spur and groove ravines, caverns and swim-throughs to explore.

And if the marine life is not enough – there are the man made treasures ‘buried’ beneath the waves. Perhaps the most famous wreck of all – the Sea Venture which was bound for Virginia in 1609 - is reputed to have inspired Shakespeare’s The Tempest. However, that theory is the creation of a man called Looney.

Whatever rings your bells beneath the surface, Bermuda is the perfect destination for every level of diver, with the majority of sites no deeper than 60ft deep and year round temperate waters, the island is host to an awe-inspiring collection of tropical fish and invertebrate species seldom found so far north in the Atlantic.

For divers wanting to know more, below are the top five reasons to choose Bermuda for their diving escapade!

1. 365 shipwrecks spanning five centuries surround the island, beginning with the wreck of the Sea Venture in 1609
2. 200 square miles of hard coral reefs crowned by swaying soft corals, gorgonians and sea fans are waiting to be explored
3. Average summer visibility on the north and west shore is 100 ft, increasing to above 150 ft from November – March. The south and east shores average 80ft year-round
4. Popular wreck the Constellation (1943, featured in the movie The Deep) can be found
5. Bermuda prides itself on having one of the healthiest coral reefs in the world

Bermuda dive operators working in cooperation with the Bermuda Department of Tourism are challenging divers visiting the island to visit the top twenty wrecks. After each dive guests will earn a Bermuda Shipwreck Certificate, a memento of the diving experience documenting the dive and providing a brief history of the wreck. Start with one and collect them all!

Wrecks featured in the top twenty include:

• Cristobal Colon a 499 foot Spanish trans-Atlantic luxury liner, which sunk in 1936 and is Bermuda’s largest wreck
• L’Herminie a French 60-gun three-masted wooden-hulled warship which sunk in 1838 on return from battle in Mexico
• Minnie Breslauer a 300 foot steel-hulled English freighter which sank on its maiden voyage from Portugal to New York in 1873
