Circular walks in South Somerset

14th July 2008 Print
Circular walks in South Somerset South Somerset has produced two walking packs covering the fragile Levels & Moors and the gentle rolling hills and valleys of Blackmore Vale. Each contains ten circular trails of between two and seven miles detailed on individual mini-maps that have been laminated to protect them from the weather.

The walks take in rural paths, droves and pretty villages; some cross farmland while others follow a river’s course or an old railway line, but all offer wonderful views across the countryside. The site of Cadbury Castle, the legendary home of King Arthur, and an ancient Royal Forest also feature in the walks. Details of refreshment stops, public transport and car parking are included plus a summary of interesting places passed on the way.

The fragile Levels & Moors lie to the north of the area at the heart of the willow growing industry. Home to numerous birds and other wildlife, and only a few metres above sea level, these lowlands have changed little over the years and are regularly flooded in winter. With the aid of these circular walks, visitors can discover an area rich in character and history, dotted with orchards, woods, withy beds and medieval churches.

Sweeping eastwards the spectacular Blackmore Vale takes in the verdant pastures and rolling hills of Camelot country where King Arthur and his knights are reputed to have held court. The walks explore quiet picturesque villages, travel through rich and varied landscapes and journey backwards into the history of our bygone times.

Copies of the two walking packs covering the Levels & Moors and Blackmore Vale are available from the Yeovil Heritage & Visitor Information Centre priced at £4.75 each (plus postage and packing). Further information and accommodation suggestions can also be found on visitsouthsomerset.com.
