Half Term fun with Minibeasts and Tarantulas

23rd October 2008 Print
From Saturday 25 October - Sunday 2 November, the Stratford Butterfly Farm is inviting children of all ages to get up close and meet the insects. The Butterfly Farm, which has the largest live insect display in the world, will be holding “Meet the Minibeasts” talks and handling sessions each day at 11:30am and 2:30pm.

Children will be able to hold Giant Stick Insects, Giant Millipedes and Giant African Snails as they learn more about these fascinating insects from experts at the Butterfly Farm.

New to the Butterfly Farm this Half Term are Skeleton Tarantulas which originate from the forests of Guyana and Northern Brazil. The spiders, otherwise known as Ephebopus Murinus, can reach up to 6 inches in legspan. They are slightly more aggressive than others in the family and have the tendency to flick hairs in defense as well as rearing up.

At the same time, visitors can see the seven other female Tarantulas all in residence within Arachnoland. The Tarantulas are kept in small glass tanks as this is a reflection of the way they live in the wild. Many species rarely move more than 10cm from their burrow entrance. All the Tarantulas are housed singly as they are highly cannibalistic although completely safe to visitors in their glass homes!

The Stratford Butterfly Farm will be open from 10:00am – 5:30pm during Half Term. For more information, log on to Butterflyfarm.co.uk.
