Why do Butterflies have scales?

17th December 2008 Print
Children will be able to find the answer to this posing question and lots of insect trivia at the Stratford Butterfly Farm from 20 December – 5 January. Using pictures and diagrams, an exciting colourful display will explain why butterflies have scales and how their scales are formed. Children will be able to colour in pictures of butterflies using glitter pens to capture the iridescence of the wings and take them home to decorate their Christmas trees.

To test their butterfly and insect knowledge, children can also take part in an exciting quiz to win insect posters. The quiz trail will lead the youngsters around the Butterfly Farm through the Caterpillar room, into Arachnoland and Insect city before ending back at the large display. There, children will be tested on things they learnt on their journey through the UK’s largest tropical butterfly paradise. With constant temperatures of over 25°C, the Stratford Butterfly Farm is the ideal place to escape the cold and entertain children this Christmas.

The Stratford Butterfly Farm will be open every day from 10:00am – 5:00pm during the Christmas holidays except Christmas Day. Last entry to the Butterfly Farm is at 3:30pm. Normal admission rates apply for the Christmas activities.
