Isles of Scilly to host third annual walking festival

This year’s event offers over 50 different themed walks, ranging from the Flowers of Scilly, to Prehistoric St Martins, Humans on Samson (one of the now uninhabited Islands), through to Castles of Scilly, Off the Beaten Track, Photography Walks and a two Island walk of Tresco and Bryher.
In addition to the wide range of themes, all of the walks vary in both in time and difficulty and are fully guided, enabling walkers of all abilities and interests to chose the events that they are particularly interested in.
There will also be a series of nighttime walks throughout the weeklong event and a series of talks, slide shows and evening events.
The full itinerary for Walk Scilly 09, in addition to information on special offers for both travel and accommodation during the event is now available on walkscilly.co.uk. Organisers hope this year’s event will help give people a better understanding of the rich history and heritage associated with the Islands which is perhaps still better known as a beach destination.
As well as having one of the most unique land and seascapes in Europe, the Isles of Scilly are literally steeped in history from bronze age burial chambers to castles, myth and legend to tales of human struggle and hardship.
Not only will the walks give people a wonderful view of the islands, but also give visitors a real insight and opportunity to understand the history that has helped shape the Islands, said Euan Rodger of Walk Scilly.
