Romancing birds & amorous butterflies

22nd January 2009 Print
Valentine’s Day may be a few weeks away; however a number of new tropical birds are already in the mood for romance at the Stratford Butterfly Farm. Rescued from Rutland Water Butterfly Farm which has since closed, the Stratford Butterfly Farm now boasts a number of beautiful exotic birds.

Visitors can watch two yellow and two green Ringneck Parakeets, five Cockatiels, two Sunbirds, three Diamond Doves, two Rosella birds, a Senegal Parrot and an Amazon parrot named Tom, happily co-exist with the butterflies in their natural style habitat. The birds, which only feed on seeds or nectar and don’t eat butterflies, are extremely friendly and amazing to watch as they fly around.

The two Rosella birds, which originate from Australia, have become inseparable and can be found lovingly entwined on the branches. Meanwhile two of the beautiful Diamond Doves have started their own love affair. The Diamond Dove is one of the smallest of the Australian doves and so named as it has a grey body with white diamond specks on its wings. However, one of the most unlikely relationships formed is that of a Kakariki Parakeet and a Japanese Quail. Originating from New Zealand, Kakarikis are extremely active and notable for their vibrant colourful plumage.

However, it’s not just the birds which are being affectionate. As the days start to get longer the butterflies are also feeling amorous and starting to mate once again. Like many other species some of the butterflies practice a courtship routine before mating to discover the suitability of the potential mate, similar to humans!

These beautiful tropical birds are another great reason to visit the Stratford Butterfly Farm this spring half term. From Saturday 14 February to Sunday 22 February, the Butterfly Farm will also be holding “Meet the Minibeasts” talks and handling sessions each day at 11.30am and 2.30pm. Children of all ages can hold Giant Stick Insects, Giant Millipedes and Giant African Snails. With so many different love affairs taking place, the Stratford Butterfly Farm is the place to spend Valentine’s Day this year. The gift shop also boasts a stunning selection of jewellery which is perfect for that special Valentines gift.

The Stratford Butterfly Farm will be open every day from 10:00am – 5:00pm. Last entry to the Butterfly Farm is at 4:00pm. For more information, log on to Butterflyfarm.co.uk.
